Exmoor is primarily an upland area made up mainly of small villages and hamlets. The largest settlements are Porlock, Dulverton, Lynton, and Lynmouth, Simonsbath and Wheddon Cross.

Porlock, set in one of the most fertile and beautiful vales in England, is an ancient port and settlement mentioned in the Saxon Chronicle for raids by the Danes. Wander up the Hawkcombe Water past the church or down the old sea-lanes to the great shingle ridge that separates Porlock Weir from Hurlestone Point and the views of overhanging Exmoor are matchless. Here, the red deer are to be seen among the trees or ranging freely on the open moor. Porlock still retains much of its magic and is still the haunt of artists, poets and writers. Coleridge, Southey and Munnings all adored the place and the visitor will see why when he comes to stay. John Gilman
