Exmoor is primarily an upland area made up mainly of small villages and hamlets. The largest settlements are Porlock, Dulverton, Lynton, and Lynmouth, Simonsbath and Wheddon Cross.

The Exmoor region is home or or was once home to a number of interesting railways. These range from the now extinct 45 mile long Somerset and Devon Railway, which connected Taunton with Barnstaple, to the 862 ft. Funicular Cliff Railway, which still connects Lynton and Lynmouth.
