Williton Somerset

Williton is a medium-sized village in West Somerset, England. Williton is situated 2 miles south of Watchet on the coast and is roughly equidistant between Minehead, Bridgwater and Taunton. Named from the ancient Willett River, Williton was known as the 'long town' with its Long Street driving from the town out to the railway and the road for Bridgwater. Always a busy farming and commercial centre it was also the crossroads for access to Watchet and Taunton. In the last century Williton was a bustling market, with shops and small businesses that have developed into a base for the regional administration. Notable are the many cottages and buildings from the seventeenth century that have escaped demolition, the Mason's Arms public house being among them. At the bottom of Long Street lies the beautufully restored nineteenth century hospital that used to be the district 'workhouse'. A gem of a building, a tribute to the firm that brought it back from a ruin some years ago and well worth seeing.
